ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jean Michael Basquiat
Basquiat began as a graffiti artist, coming out of Brooklyn in the late 70’s, with a couple friends to form the street art trio SAMO. Eventually he moved into the neo-expressionist genre and started collaborating with musicians and other artists, including Andy Warhol & David Bowie. In fact, he was one of the first black artists to be admitted into a museum or gallery. His schizophrenic brushstrokes and odd symbolism definitely show he was a pretty weird cat and was even known to have extreme mood swings, manic behavior, compulsive spending tendencies, poor hygiene and strange rituals— therefore it was probably no surprise when he died of a heroin & cocaine overdose when he was 27. Clearly, this was no quiet mind.
